Topic: RFI in the Shack: Bob Brehm-AK6R is Chief Engineer of Palomar Engineers , a company that specializes in helping hams deal with radio frequency interference. Bob will talk about the causes of RFI and how to reduce or eliminate it in your shack. Bob has been a ham for over 50 years with experience in contesting, RTTY, amplitude modulation, vintage radio restoration, boat anchors, linear amps and unique antennas.

Topic- Ham Radio on the International Space Station: NASA astronaut Doug “Wheels” Wheelock-KF5BOC is a veteran of Space Shuttle mission STS-120 as well as ISS Expedition 24, and was Commander of Expedition 25. During this mission, Wheelock conducted three unplanned spacewalks to replace a faulty ammonia pump module. He was selected to be an astronaut by NASA in 1998. The retired U.S. Army Colonel has accumulated more than 178 days in space.

Stu offers common sense advice on a variety to topics from buying the right radio, setting up antennas as well as suggestions on activities where you can put your new ham privileges to good use. And as always, CVARC Elmers will chip in with their best tips.

Topic/Guest Speaker – Deep Space Communications and the Deep Space Network: Stephen Townes-WB4ILW will the Deep Space Network, an international array of giant radio antennas that supports interplanetary spacecraft missions. He will also give us an overview of the fundamentals of deep space communications and aspects of flight hardware. Dr. Townes is the Chief Technologist of the Interplanetary Network Directorate and Manager of the Technology, Standards and Spectrum Program Office at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He is the current President of the JPL Amateur Radio Club.

Topic/Guest Speaker –DMR: Michael Ricky-AF6FB is active with the PAPA System which is on 15 hilltops with 42 repeaters covering Southern California with analog, DMR, and D-Star repeaters. You will find AF6FB on the DMR using the SoCal (31066) or California (3016) talk groups.

Topic/Guest Speaker – Field Day: CVARC Operations Chair Martin Hickey-AJ6CL will discuss plans for what will certainly be the most unique Field Day in club history. Due to the anticipated restrictions on large gatherings, Field Day (June 27-28) will transition from a group activity into individual station events. Martin will discuss the Field Day rules and operating options for individual stations. He’ll also share some of the ideas planned for, albeit distant, social interaction to keep us connected as a club on Field Day weekend.
